The Best on Netflix Right Now

As a student on my year abroad, I'd say free time is definitely one of the main perks of being here. I've been able to keep up with my favourite shows, try out some new ones and not have to worry about any upcoming deadlines. Today's post is all about a few shows and films that I would definitely recommend to anyone with a German Netflix subscription.

1. Pretty Little Liars

I'll admit that German Netflix only host the first four out of six seasons of PLL but it's totally worth it to get you started on the road to addiction. My plot summary is so: A group of four teenage girl best friends are shocked when the fifth member mysteriously goes missing. Months later the girls begin to receive creepy text messages from an anonymous 'A' who threatens to reveal their darkest secrets. If you still haven't heard of the show, where have you been?!

2. Jessica Jones

I would be lying if I said I didn't start watching this show simply at the mention of David Tennant but Jessica Jones is a great introduction to the world of Marvel, without having to watch and memorize Daredevil. It's got everything from suspense, horror, science fiction to romance (kind of). It's been advertised everywhere so there's no escaping it but the hype is definitely real.

3. Nashville

Taking another route to Country Music Dramas, I loved watching the first season of Nashville. Hayden Panettiere plays the gorgeous but fiesty pop star Juliet Barnes who has been put on the tour of country legend Rayna James in order to save money at their record label. To say the two don't get along is an understatement. If you're into musical dramas, this show's definitely for you.

4. Heroes

Another show starring Hayden Panettiere, Heroes is about people with extraordinary abilities (self healing, time travel, telekinesis, flying) fighting against an evil super-villain to save the world. Cliche? Maybe a little, but Milo Ventimiglia makes it all worth it.

5. Jane the Virgin

Probably my favourite show on Netflix so far, Jane the Virgin is a fantastic comedy about a woman who is accidentally artificially inseminated and becomes pregnant, despite still being a catholic virgin. People start to believe Jane is holy and she has to deal with this as well as family, romance and other life obstacles.

6. Silver Lining's Playbook

J-Law at her best, Silver Linings Playbook is a film that deals with mental illness, anxiety and bipolar disorder but mostly we're drawn to the beautiful relationship that develops between J-Law and Bradley Cooper's characters despite emotional baggage and family issues.

7. The Perks of Being a Wallflower

Almost as good as the book, the film adaptation of The Perks of Being a Wallflower is a cult 'coming-of-age' indie drama that has somehow found itself in the Netflix 'comedy' category. It has its bittersweet moments but I wouldn't necessarily call it a comedy. Expect a brilliant cast including Emma Watson and Nina Dobrev and a plot that leaves you hanging.

Other notable mentions - in no particular order - are

  • The Vampire Diaries
  • Brooklyn Nine Nine
  • The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt
  • Modern Family
  • New Girl
  • Gotham
  • Suits
  • Orange is the New Black
  • He's just not that into you
  • Crazy Stupid Love
  • Fresh Meat
  • Mean Girls
  • Ferris Bueller's Day Off
  • 10 things I hate about you
  • Clueless

Some of these favourites have accumulated over the past few years and I'm sure you'll have ticked off some of these already. On my list at the moment I'm hoping to get into Gossip Girl or even Breaking Bad.
